Why Insurance Agents Have No Time
All this week we’re tackling false beliefs that insurance agents have, and this one is definitely one that you’ve either heard or said before: the fact that insurance agents have no time. When we work with agencies, time and time again we hear how busy they are, and how no one has any time to get anything done. So let’s talk about why insurance agents have no time, and what to do about it.
“In insurance we don’t have any plans other than ‘we’re gonna go on a rollercoaster of a day and kill ourselves’ and it’s literally working the most inefficient way possible.”
Fast or right?
When insurance agents say they have no time, the first thing that comes to mind is the idea of fast versus right. If insurance agents are busy trying to get work done as quickly as possible, there is a good chance that they’re focusing on doing things fast, instead of slowing down to do them right the first time. When people use the word “busy,” it’s really not a plan. If your plan is showing up for the day with no plan and no organizational strategy, that is not a plan of attack. You need to have a value system in place that affirms the fact that you’re going to do it right the first time, that you’re going to do first-call resolution, and you’re going to take the time on the phone to tie everything up with a bow. When you give 100% of your attention to a task, you’re then able to give 100% of your attention to the next client.
We’re Addicted To Low-Level Work Fear
There’s a problem in agency culture, and it’s the fact that we’re a little bit addicted to low-level work fear. Many agents live in the chaos that surrounds insurance, because we’re so addicted to this pace of life. When we look at why insurance agents have no time, we see that there is a pattern of behavior where agents continue a cycle that leaves them feeling busy, stressed, and overwhelmed.
Fast Food Or Fine Dining?
When wondering why insurance agents have no time, the question you want to ask yourself is if you want to be a fast food restaurant or fine dining establishment. Many of our agencies want to be a boutique agency, but they’re operating like a fast food chain restaurant. If you want to be that boutique agency that is focused on clients and delivers results, you need to operate like one.
Many times when insurance agents say they have no time, they also acknowledge the fact that they haven’t taken a deep breath to unpack things or talk through what they’re experiencing, and they’re continuing to live in the chaos. But as it turns out, the truth is that most of the time there is enough time, and agents simply need a plan.
