Should You Add Salary to Your Job Description

When we head into a new agency that is hiring, we are often asked this question. They wonder if it’s really necessary or if it will start communication off on the wrong foot. But when we are asked if you should add a salary to your job description, we always, always say yes.

Sometimes agencies add ranges, but we think that needs to be done very carefully. You should never mislead anyone with something you can’t sustain.”

That’s right. You should add salary on every single job posting you have for your insurance agency.

But what about our competitors? Should they be able to see that? Won’t it make our applicant pool worse because they’ll only be applying for the sake of the money?

With the job market the way it is, it doesn’t matter that your competition will know what you are paying people. We can almost guarantee that your competitors have a salary posted, too. As far as applicant pools go, we think it will actually make it better.

Money is a very important thing today. People have a lifestyle or responsibilities that they need to maintain which means they know what level of income they require. When people are worried about money, research shows that their IQ drops a few points as opposed to when things are covered.

So, giving people a chance to understand what kind of like your agency offers them is important.

If you are still on the fence you could try listing all of the benefits available witht the position, including the salary. You could also add the words “starting at” in front of the number you list.

Sometimes agencies add ranges, but we think that needs to be done very carefully. You should never mislead anyone with something you can’t sustain.

But, yes. Please add a salary to your job posting. It’s better for everyone that way.
