How to Hold People Accountable Without Being a Jerk: Clear Direction

We’re back for another week of Three Minute Videos, and this week we’re discussing a topic that’s critical to agencies: how to hold people accountable. Our first tip for holding people accountable? Have clear direction in your insurance agency.

“When we’re thinking about how do we hold people accountable, I think so much of it comes from the idea that there’s not a lot of clarity around things… If it’s not clearly outlined it is hard to hold people accountable.”

Accountability can be a fine line, especially if you’re short-staffed. But when we’re thinking about holding people accountable, we find that trouble arises when there’s not a lot of clarity around things. If it’s not clearly outlined, it’s hard to hold people accountable.

When you as the agency leader find something that’s not clearly outlined, you need to do three things: re-outline it, document it, and reinstall it into your agency. That way, you can have clear direction in your agency, and accountability will become easier.

We see this lack of clarity with everything, including job descriptions, processes and procedures, and agency values. And when you run into an accountability issue, you need to start looking at it as a clear opportunity for change.

As the leader, you need to set the course, and put up the boundaries and the rails. Many leaders blame themselves when something goes wrong. Once you start building these building blocks, you’re empowered to hold people accountable. So take the time to slow down to speed up, and hold people accountable by providing clarity in every area of your agency.
