How to Get Insurance Generations to Thrive – Mentor Program

A topic that can cause a divide in your agency is the value of experience. Younger staff are generally good with the new tech stuff and older staff are better with the super niche aspects of insurance. But both aspects are important in your business which is why you should use a mentor program in your insurance agency.

 

Sometimes, we can have people with 10, 20, or 30+ years in this industry and that means something. Let them become mentors for the future of your agency. 

 

Give them the tools to teach. Insurance is very, very complicated and has a lot of quirks. It takes time and guidance to learn that complexity in a way that’s not overwhelming. 

 

And as for carriers, new staff needs to know them like the back of their little, newbie hands. 

 

They need to be able to get on a call and emulate a master of information regarding your carriers. That kind of knowledge and recall is best established with guidance and precedent. 

 

We also say that you should “honor their experience” and it’s true. We have all seen the way older, experienced groups are talked about and it’s just not helping anyone. Generations build on top of the work of those that came before them. 

 

Give the outbound staff the chance to invest in the agency that they put so much into. So, yes, use a mentor program in your insurance agency and don’t let those years go to waste.
