Best Practices of a Multigeneration Agency – Team Communication
Multigenerational insurance agencies can be incredible businesses, but these types of agencies also come with their specific challenges. All this week we’re diving into the best practices of a multigenerational insurance agency, and today we’re covering why clear team communication is important.
“The main thing is have that plan and then communicate that and make the team feel most comfortable.”
In a multigenerational insurance agency, there is going to be a lot of transition, especially when new family members come in or legacy ones leave. Let’s say a son or daughter is coming in and needs to take on new responsibilities or on the other end, maybe a father or mother is having a tough time letting go of certain things.
In order for situations to be solved peacefully and easily, there needs to be clear communication, and a set plan in place. In fact, there should be a written plan or document that everyone can work off of, that clarifies exactly what is going to happen, how long it’s going to take, what it’s going to look like, and what everyone’s roles are. This document can even detail when someone is going to start, when someone else’s authority is going to end, and what’s happening all the way up and down the line.
All of these things need to be clearly communicated with the team. And in order for this whole thing to work, there need to be clearly defined roles. Communicating plans clearly is also important for team buy-in, which is absolutely critical for times of transition.
When one generation is leaving, they need guidelines to turn to which outline exactly how they should be exiting. And for the generation that’s coming in, these specific plans will help them feel comfortable and take on the appropriate amount of work. At the end of the day, just keep in mind that you need to have a plan and need to communicate it, to ensure everyone on your team is comfortable at the multigenerational insurance agency,
