How to Embrace Role Playing – Listen Objectively to Feedback
If role playing in an insurance agency isn’t your favorite thing, you’re definitely not the only one. But that’s why all this week we’re covering how to embrace role playing. One of the bigger issues we see is that people who do role playing tend to take it personally. Instead, you should learn how to simply respond to the scenario itself without reacting to any curveballs, and listen to feedback objectively.
“When you’re getting your constructive criticism and someone gives you a negative feedback or constructive feedback, you wanna make sure that you take that and not be defensive about it. They’re not attacking you as a person. They’re helping you to get better at your role play, get better at your role within the agency or within the company.”
When you start getting the feedback, and hearing what you did right and what you did wrong, it’s very easy to get defensive. Even throughout the process, when you’re sitting across from your partner and they ask you questions to throw you off or give you a curveball, don’t react to those. Simply take a deep breath, overcome the objection, or answer the question to the best of your knowledge.
The other part of this has to do with constructive criticism. When someone gives you negative or constructive feedback, make sure you don’t get defensive about it. They’re not attacking you as a person. They’re helping you get better at your role playing, which ultimately means getting better at your agency or with your company.
Next, make sure you take notes on your feedback. This is something you should be doing all the time anyway. Think of it this way, if you’re not coachable, not teachable, and you can’t take constructive criticism, you’re never going to improve. So take the time, take notes, and respond positively. When you receive constructive criticism, you can say something like, “If you perceive it this way, I need to work on this.”
Lastly, always remember that this feedback is coming from a good place. Don’t react negatively to tricky scenarios or questions, your partner and your leader aren’t there to cut you down. They’re there to help push you to be better and improve your knowledge. We also think it’s a great idea to record sessions like this, and play them back. You can see what went wrong, what went right, and hone in on how that feedback can really help you.
