Step 1: How is this better for the customer?
We often make decisions that benefit the team, or efficiency or to benefit an internal process. We need to break that habit. The first thing we have to answer is, how is this better for our customer? Is it a little better or significantly better? If it is not better for our customers, stop immediately and rethink your decision!
Step 2: How does this benefit the agency as a whole?
What benefit is the agency receiving? Is the process more efficient? Does it help streamline work? Will it limit customer complaints? Does it save money? Will it free people up to generate revenue? The agency must receive a benefit in every decision as well.
Step 3: How does it benefit the staff?
We cannot make decisions that only benefit the staff. Too often I find agency owners say, “ohh the staff won’t like that” or “I’m worried someone will leave if we do that”. We have to fight against those thoughts. The reality is that you pay people in exchange for their time and you get to select what they do. Now, you have to invest in training and preparing your staff to meet these challenges but that is simple when you believe in your decision! The staff benefits last since they are there to serve the agency and the customers.
