Insurance Attitude — How To Stay Positive In Insurance & Life
In the day-to-day life of an insurance agent, there are plenty of things that can happen that could sour a positive attitude.
“I expect that life will be challenging, I expect that I will fail, I expect that it will be hard, and I’ve trained my brain to say if it feels uncomfortable or feels hard, then I need to keep pushing forward, not retreating back, and that has helped me out a ton.”
Keeping your insurance attitude positive is definitely a big challenge when working as an agent, because we deal with things like burnout, difficult customers, and everything else life has to offer.
When you have a positive insurance attitude, you can perform your job more like a Tigger, instead of an Eeyore, which is great for you, your agency, and your clients. And it’s not just about work: it’s important to keep a positive attitude in other areas of your life, in order to feel happy and fulfilled.
If you struggle with keeping your chin up, you’re definitely not alone, because it can be a big challenge. Here’s how you can keep a positive attitude, in both insurance work and in life.
1.Find your Doritos
First thing’s first: tough days are bound to happen. Whether it’s a particularly unpleasant customer interaction, or something in your personal life, you’re going to have hurdles that come your way. When this happens, it’s important to find something small to brighten your day. For us, it’s usually Doritos, but it can be anything, like listening to a good song or taking a walk. When you’re having a tough day, a small moment of pleasure can help turn your attitude around.
2.Keep perspective in mind
When your insurance attitude is turning negative, try to put things in perspective. There are plenty of people out there, struggling with really intense issues, who would love to be in your shoes with this little problem right now. Putting your insurance troubles in perspective can help remind you that they’re really quite manageable, and likely very small in the grand scheme of things.
3.Will it matter in a year?
Even if an issue does seem monumental, and it’s turning your insurance attitude sour, ask yourself this: will it matter in a year from now? A majority of the time, the answer to that question will be no. Many of the issues we deal with in our day are of minimal significance in the long run, and keeping that in mind can help us stay positive.
4.Keep your expectations realistic
Hey, this is life we’re talking about here. It’s not going to be rainbows and butterflies everyday, and it’s important to remember that, and keep our expectations realistic. If we anticipate occasional challenges, failure, and other difficulties, we’ll be much better equipped to handle them, and push through the discomfort that comes along with them.
