When you’re in the business of insurance day after day, it can be easy to lose sight of the value of your work. And that’s why we think this point in our Ridiculously Amazing Agent series is particularly important. As an insurance agent, it’s important to remember the fact that we protect people, which is a huge honor. We need to keep that privilege in mind, and work to shift our focus from completing tasks, to seeing outcomes.
“Remember: your role everyday is to protect what people work hard for… if the worst happens, you want to know someone has your back, and that’s what we have to take seriously” (1:24)
By providing insurance policies, we’re protecting what people work hard for. If the worst thing happens to them, they’re going to be protected, because of the work that you’ve done. Here’s how you can remember that you’re in the business of protecting people, and keep that value in mind while working as a Ridiculously Amazing Agent.
Decide if this work is a job, career, or calling
If you treat your role as an agent as a “job,” you’re probably not going to feel very connected to it. You’re likely going to struggle to feel motivated, only be focused on completing tasks instead of the outcomes, and look to get home as quickly as possible. If this is a career, it’s probably something you’re more invested in, and you’re much more likely to treat it seriously.
Reject the idea of tasks
In general, focusing on tasks can lead to plenty of trouble. In a recent video, we spoke about the value of slowing down to speed up, and the importance of focusing on outcomes. When you focus on outcomes, you won’t simply rush through a checklist of tasks, and instead you’ll be focused on finding the best outcomes for your clients.
Focus on educating and leading clients
When you take the time to educate and lead clients through the insurance process, you’re actually empowering them to make their own decisions. When you do this, you’re actually doing your own industry justice, because you’re putting in your best effort to protect people. At the end of the day, a client can still say no to an option, but it’s still important to provide them with that choice.
Remember that insurance is essential
If someone is to experience a crisis, their insurance may be the one thing that helps them make it through the situation. We know that insurance is essential, and during the coronavirus pandemic, we saw exactly how essential the insurance industry is. Treating it like something that is essential is crucial to remembering the value in your work.
When you’re passionate about your work, your clients are going to feel it. The same goes for when you’re uninspired by your work, or when you’re acting like an Eeyore. When you remember that you’re protecting people and what they’ve worked hardest for in this world, you’re much more likely to treat this work like a craft or a trade. And when you treat your work seriously, your client will start following suit.
