What Insurance Agents Can Learn From 75 HARD About Excuses

All this week we’re talking about the mental toughness challenge known as 75 Hard, and the incredible business lessons we’ve learned from it. To learn more about what exactly this challenge is, you can check out yesterday’s post here. Today, we’re going to dive right into what insurance agents can learn from 75 Hard about excuses.

“See the excuses for what they are, call them out on it and say, how are we gonna get back here and get to creating the plan?”

A quick recap: 75 Hard is a mental toughness challenge that lasts for 75 days. And as you go through the challenge, you have to take progress pictures of yourself everyday, and upload them to an app. And there are no rest days, cheat days, or breaks during the challenge. In fact, if you miss a day, you get sent back to the beginning.

What We’ve Learned About Excuses

The 75 Hard challenge is pretty strict, and it really requires challenging yourself. It’s easy to make an excuse not to stick to your diet or not to work out, and you really have to push to not make excuses.

When we started doing this challenge, we started to mentally come up with a lot of excuses for why we should break from the challenge. “Oh, I got in late,” or “It’s a long day, I’m gonna eat that dessert.” We were making up excuses that would trip us up from hitting our true goals.

The funny thing is now we can see excuses everywhere, and we’re able to pinpoint them pretty quickly. An excuse is someone’s reasoning for not being able to hit their potential. So we started to fight against our excuses. We started doing whatever we needed to in order to get in that workout before boarding a plane all day, even if it involved waking up at 3:00 am to do a 45 minute walk outside in a hotel parking lot.

When you start seeing your excuse patterns, you can certainly see it in business and insurance. “Oh, we just didn’t get to that,” or “I just didn’t call the client back, I didn’t have time to do the quote.” You have to really ask yourself what’s the excuse, what were you doing instead?

What we see in a lot of agencies is excuses coming up because there’s no true commitment to getting things done. We like to say that excuses are a problem, because you’re just describing the water while someone’s drowning. At the end of the day, you need to see what excuses for what they are, call them out on it, and say “How are we going to get back to creating the plan forward?”
